Approach video interviews in an identical manner

Given the visual and audio capabilities in many employers’ communications arsenal (i.e., Zoom, Skype, GoTo Meeting, etc.), you may be asked to participate in a long-distance interview. Telephonic interviews took on a whole new identity when the coronavirus pandemic generated protocols restricting people distancing, travel, and meeting management.

Long distance can mean across town or on the other side of the globe. You will be having a face-to-face experience, but you and your interviewer will be at different ends of a camera and a microphone. If your interview is to be conducted in this manner, all of the rules presented herein are still applicable, as well as a handful of others.

Individuals participating in video interviews should make certain they are familiar and comfortable with the technological equipment that is being used so the experience goes forward without any technical glitches. Care must also be taken to ensure that the surroundings, lighting, and general privacy is appropriate for the formal activity. For example, one should never attempt to participate in a video interview from an environment (i.e., current job location, Starbucks, etc.) where they cannot speak freely and be heard or a location where the interview might be disturbed by people, telephones, and other intrusions.
